The world first presbyopic lens of a new type implanted at GEMINI Zlín
The lens of the new generation and of revolutionary design was implanted for the first time in the world at GEMINI Eye Clinic in Zlín.
The new phakic diffractive lens is a solution for presbyopia and helps the patients from their reading glasses. Presbyopia occurs in almost all people over 40 years of age. "In the past years, presbyopia was treated by an exchange of the human lens for an artificial intraocular lens. For the first time it is possible to implant a so called posterior chamber phakic lens with diffractive optics. This allows to leave the human lens in the eye. The procedure offers a solution for treating the patient`s poor distance as well as poor reading distance vision," described Pavel Stodůlka, the head surgeon at GEMINI Eye Clinic.
The diffractive optics of an artificial lens distributes the light into more optical zones and thus the patient becomes able to focus at multiple distances. The ideal group of patients suitable for the treatment are patients at the age of 40 to 60. "After the procedure, the patient`s natural lens keeps partially functioning and at the same time, the new lens helps to correct the eye error of poor distance and poor close distance sight; the diffractive optics helps in reading and close distance vision," explained Dr. Stodůlka.
"The new lens, in the development of which GEMINI Eye Clinic participated, is inserted into the posterior chamber behind the pupil. The lens thus becomes invisible for the eye. It is so thin that it can be very hard for an ophthalmologist using a measuring device to recognize it in the eye,“ says Pavel Stodůlka.
The advantage of intraocular lenses implantations lies in the fact that the vision often improves rapidly and patient can see bettr in only a few hours after the treatment. "The first two patients, to who the new presbyopic lens was implanted, were a 70-year-old male with troublesome distance vision and no capacity of reading without his glasses. The other one could see better in the distance, but he could not read without his glasses either. Both the patients felt well after the 15-minute procedure and immediately after the procedure they were able to read a short text without glasses," said dr. Netuková who examined both the patients.
